Greetings.

I’m writing this on Thursday, August 30. I’ve just arrived home from the airport. I can report the status and progress of the Chapter building. The lumber and materials for the deck were purchased and delivered on Tuesday. The framing for the deck and most of the handicapped ramp is complete. The deck boards have been cut and installed and are in the process of being screwed onto the framing. All of this is being done by volunteer labor, which is the epitome of the EAA can-do spirit. It is so gratifying to see so many volunteers show up to help. On Tuesday, when the materials arrived, there also arrived, eventually, at least TEN people. The work began and the deck took shape. There was an occasional discussion as to how it could better be designed and whether or not this should go here and that should go there and it would work better if we did this. There were compromises made and the progress continued. It was NEAT to sit back and watch the workers be absorbed in their work and to see their chests swell with pride as it began to take shape. It was evident that these guys were having fun working on this Chapter project. Wednesday brought the rains and work was suspended till after lunchtime. The afternoon brought higher temperatures and high humidity, however, these guys are tenacious and the work continued. Some of the volunteers escaped but the core stuck it out. They got a little over half the deck boards fitted and then decided Thursday is another day. By the time I left there today, Thursday, they had all the boards down and about half the screws in and were discussing the design of the railings and the ramp. As far as I know they’re still out there working. Dennis Hoffman showed up and had a meeting with the Xcell energy people. It was decided that we have to dig a 300-foot trench to bury the power line to the building. Here is another opportunity for some of you other people to get in on the fun. Jerry Sarracco or Paul Leidl was going to look into the cost of renting a trencher. I don’t know the result of that investigation, but you can find out just by asking Paul or Jerry and I’m sure they will be glad to let you take a shot at operating it. I think Jerry can give you some dual instruction and in no time at all he can indorse you for solo.

I don’t know where we stand financially, I haven’t had a chance to talk with Marlon, but we need some more money. If you’ve made your pledge and haven’t sent a check, please do so ASAP. If you haven’t made a pledge, please give it some thought. If you had been there to see the pride of accomplishment on the faces of our volunteers, you would know what a worthy cause this is. As you drive into the airport entrance, you can see the building and what a wonderful addition it is to the Lake Elmo Airport. The building has a fresh coat of paint on it and most of the skirting is done and there is enough of the deck there for you to get an idea what it’s going to look like. I know when you see it, your enthusiasm and pride will equal mine.

I’d like to schedule a board meeting for Wednesday, September 5^th. It will be held at Dennis Hoffman’s hangar at 7:00 in the evening. Our main topic will be the Chapter building, its finances and its construction. The general meeting will be held on Monday, September 10^th at the Christ Lutheran Church of Lake Elmo. The meeting will begin at 7:30 P.M. For the program, we hope to have the recipient of the Chapter 54 Air Academy Scholarship address our chapter with a presentation on his experience at Oshkosh.

We have taken in receipts of $1400, $1300 of which I turned over to the Treasurer at the last meeting, and $100 of which came in the mail as a check since then.

In addition we have pledges of $850.

If all of those pledges follow through, that would total $2250 as of now, or exactly half-way to our stated goal.
